According to technology media \”The Information\”, Elon Musk\’s artificial intelligence startup xAI plans to build a large-scale supercomputer to enhance its artificial intelligence chat robot Grok.
This supercomputer, which Musk calls a \”supercomputing factory,\” is expected to be ready in the fall of 2025 and may involve cooperation with Oracle (ORCL-US).
With this development, Musk aims to significantly surpass rival GPU clusters in scale and capabilities.
In a presentation to investors, Musk revealed that the new supercomputer will use up to 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs based on the Hopper architecture, making it at least four times larger than the largest existing GPU clusters.
In April, Musk aimed to raise $4 billion in funding for xAI at a $15 billion valuation.
The surge in investor interest prompted Musk to raise his fundraising target to $6 billion, valuing the company at $18 billion.
Additionally, these funds are expected to significantly increase xAI’s GPU count.
The goal is to increase the number from about 10,000 to 100,000 GPUs.
This expansion is not just a quantitative increase but a strategic enhancement designed to unify these GPUs into a powerful supercomputer architecture enabling Grok to reach new heights of AI efficiency and capability.
Musk shared his vision for the trajectory of xAI at the VivaTech 2024 conference in Paris.
He expressed confidence that xAI will catch up with artificial intelligence industry leaders such as OpenAI and DeepMind by the end of 2024.
Musk also speculates that artificial intelligence systems like Grok can surpass humans in all tasks by the end of 2025, potentially redefining humans\’ role in the economy.
Musk is positioning xAI as a formidable challenger in artificial intelligence, which is exactly why he needs the upcoming supercomputer.
NVDA\’s (NVDA-US) H100 series of powerful GPUs dominate the AI data center chip market but are hard to come by due to high demand.
Huida also expects to launch the H200 computing GPU for AI and HPC applications and is preparing to launch Blackwell-based B100 and B200 GPUs in the second half of this year.
