After the results of the investigation into the contaminated blood scandal were announced on the 20th, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sincerely apologized for the \”failures\” of his country\’s previous governments, calling this day a day of national shame in the UK and promising to compensate the victims at all costs.
The Times previously reported that the cost of compensation could be as high as 22 billion pounds.
An investigation into the scandal found that British authorities and the Public Health Service exposed tens of thousands of patients to fatal infections from contaminated blood and blood products and concealed the truth about the catastrophe for decades.
The Infected Blood Survey concluded that more than 30,000 people in the UK were infected with viruses such as HIV and hepatitis after receiving contaminated blood from the 1970s to the early 1990s.
The investigation report stated that due to insufficient blood supply in the UK, blood and blood products imported from the United States were used to treat hemophilia patients and for blood transfusions during delivery or during surgery.
But some imported blood comes from high-risk donors such as prisoners and drug addicts, leading to some blood being contaminated with HIV and hepatitis C viruses.
An estimated 3,000 people died and many suffered lifelong illnesses in what is widely regarded as the deadliest disaster in the history of Britain\’s state-run National Health Service (NHS) since it was founded in 1948.
The bombshell report, released on Monday, is more than 2,500 pages long and reveals a series of \”failures\” that had \”catastrophic\” consequences for victims and their loved ones.
Sunak said after the report was released that the inquiry should \”shock our country to its core\” and that it showed \”decades of moral failure at the heart of our national life\”.
Sunak condemned NHS England, the civil service and government officials for having \”let the country down\”.
Sunak told parliament: \”I want to offer a wholehearted and unequivocal apology for this horrific injustice and commit to providing full compensation to those affected.
\”The UK government has made interim payments of around £400 million to some victims and bereaved partners.
The British Treasury estimates that the total compensation will reach 5 billion to 22 billion pounds, which will have a significant impact on the British health care system and even the national finances. It will also affect the current government\’s plan to cut taxes before the next election.
